Smaragd is a classification in Wachau where the wine contains a higher alcohol content than other classifications such as Federspiel and Steinfeder.

Rinaldo Rinaldi is the man behind Villa Rinaldi. The winery has its roots in the last century, but the way it looks today is largely due to Rinaldo Rinaldi. Back in the 60s, he revolutionized the winery. Until then, generations had produced classic Verona wines such as Amarone della Valpolicella. Rinaldi made agreements with a number of farmers who had fields and vines that fulfilled all his wishes. He found them in the Adige Valley. The contracts he drew up back then are the ones they still operate by.
